Why a Half Degree Rise in Global Temperature Would Be Catastrophic

Why a Half Degree Rise in Global Temperature Would Be Catastrophic

By Micah Moen 100 Comments September 11, 2019

Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising,
droughts are more frequent, extreme weather events more common– This is climate change
in action, and you’ve heard it all before. But a major report just came out that looks
at how close we are to this irreversible damage, and it’s looking bad. Real bad. Back in 2015, the world’s leaders came together
to solidify a plan to combat climate change. The resulting Paris Agreement set a goal to
hold “the increase of global average temperature to well below 2 degrees celsius above pre-industrial
levels” and added the intent of “limiting the temperature increase to 1.5°C. But now,
in October of 2018, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or the IPCC, compiled
the results of over 6,000 scientific studies and released a new report. The main takeaway? At our current rate, global average temperature
is likely to rise 1.5°C between as early as 2030.This means, we only have 12 years
to make drastic changes, or we’ll miss our target. The difference between 1.5 and 2 may seem
small, and and it’s hard to imagine how half a degree could make much of an impact. But using climate models, scientists can predict
what that half a degree actually means for our planet. And, well, it means a lot. First there’s the arctic. At 1.5 degrees warming, arctic sea ice will
still last through most summers, but at 2 degrees, ice-free summers become 10 times
more likely. This would not only be devastating for arctic
wildlife, but would reduce the albedo, or the amount of light being reflected away from
earth, causing even more warming. Ice melt coupled with rising temperatures
means sea level rise. At 1.5 degrees warming, average sea level
rise could be somewhere between 26 and 77 centimeters. At 2 degrees, that range could go up a whole
10 centimeters. That change could expose about 10 million
more people to harmful flooding than if warming stays at 1.5. A warmer world also means that fresh water
will become even more scarce. At 1.5 degrees, severe drought will likely
affect 350 million people, but at 2 degrees, that number grows to about 411 million people. Heatwaves get worse, too. At 1.5 degrees, about 14% of the world’s
population will be exposed to severe heat waves, and at 2 degrees that number more than
doubles, raising to a whopping 37%. Then, there’s the coral reefs. At 1.5 degrees warming, 70-90% of coral reefs
die. At 2 degrees, that number grows to greater
than 99%, meaning virtually all coral reefs will disappear. This would be devastating to marine biodiversity
and affect nearly 500 million people who rely on them for storm protection, food, jobs and
recreation. If none of this phases you, a separate study
published in Nature looked into how many people could die from that half degree rise. They found that due to air pollution alone,
an additional 150 million people could die if we hit 2 degrees. And that’s not even including the likely
deaths by heat wave, drought, and famine. So what can we do? Well, the report makes it clear that the pledges
made in the Paris Agreement will not be enough. It not only states that these goals won’t
keep us under the 1.5 degree mark, but that they could result in a warming of THREE DEGREES
by 2100. A whole degree higher than what the world
decided should be an upper threshold. To prevent this, the report states that we
have to drastically reduce CO2 emissions well before 2030, and at faster rate than we ever
have before. And while highly unlikely, scientists are
stressing that keeping warming to 1.5 degrees is still possible. Projections suggest it would require CO2 emissions
to take a nosedive and then operate in the negatives towards the end of the century. While there’s no definitive plan yet, it
would likely involve steep, across the board investment in renewables, the electrification
of huge energy sectors that currently run on fossil fuels, and rapid advances in negative
emission technologies that can suck carbon out of the air. Among other things– like a carbon tax, a
world-wide reduction in meat consumption, a decline in population growth, and maximized
global energy efficiency. So yeah, it will take quite literally everything
we’ve got, but it’s possible. So what do you think, can we do it? Negative emission technologies could be a
big player in our fight against climate change, but how feasible are they? We’ve got a video coming about about that
soon. And to stay up to date with all the latest
climate news, make sure to subscribe. Thanks for watching Seeker.

If you think about climate change and the sea levels rising, don't think about your feet getting wet. Think about >400 Million climate refugees trying to live a decent life. This would be the biggest wave (pun not intended) of refugees we know about and would bring even more problems in addition to the species dying or alienating on our planet due to drastically different, man made temperature changes.

Why do all try to prevent climate change? Wouldn't it be smart to try to cope with it as good as possible? I mean, we will destroy the planet… And if we don't, nature will. Nature will adapt, even if temperatures are rising. The planet has been changing for as long as its been around. Life as a whole will always adapt. Even if it means for some organisms to disappear. For this reason I believe we are not meant to prevent change. Not saying that we should destroy the planet on purpose… Hope you get what I'm trying to say.

That won't happen. Look at Westerners already killing themselves and their culture by letting in eastern savages, Muslims and Africans, and they are the rich countries. Then you have cancerous feminism, social Marxism, forced multiculturalism, multigender insanity, so many other dangerous problems, climate change is the least of people's worries. It's only after people see 5 big ass hurricanes in the middle of their countries or after they're swimming in floods that they'll consider doing something about climate change, but by then, it'll be too late. Mother Nature is not kind to anyone, the universe owes no one a thing. Life is but a spectacular and extremely short-lived irregularity in the vast wasteland called the universe. We will perish like the fools we are, and the planet will endure, life will once again find its way on Earth, and we won't be a part of it.

I'm already eating much less meat, my goal is to become vegetarian, I will eat animal products, but only those which don't require to kill the animal, milk and derivative, eggs, etc. I use nearly only public transport, I use my car only when I can't do another way, that is less than 5000 km (3100 mi) a year. I decided to not have children, as there are already more than enough people on this planet.

I hate to break it to you but the world will warm up half a degree next year.
There currently is a very warm body of water (a blob) in the Northern Pacific Ocean. It is like the one that was there in 2014 except this one is warmer.
The warm blob in 2014 helped fuel the El Nino that happened in 2015-2016.
From February 2015 to February 2016 the world warmed 0.56°C. That was half a degree in just 1 year.
Now we have another even warmer blob of water in the northern Pacific Ocean and an El Nino is set to happen by the end of this year extending into 2020. That means we will likely see at least a half degree of warming in 2019.

Here is a breakdown of the IPCC report from several scientists.

Can anyone tell me if this is true…I saw someone explaining about the ice melt. He showed how ice displaces water and when it melts it doesn't come up but stays at the same level. Will the levels of the oceans rise from ice melting off of the land and not rise from melting ice in the ocean? I know we are in trouble from political greedy powerful white slugs and know if we don't do anything we are doomed. Thanks.

I agree a global taxation on carbon emissions (already being done on a national scale to great effect) would work and mostly eliminate this problem if introduced slowly. What we really need is effective global government. All the people saying "we are killing our planet"…no, we are not. Life began on Earth when it was hotter, and sustained itself when it was colder multiple times (the ice ages). What has happened intermittently is mass extinctions, a kind of a culling of all species that could not adapt to relatively faster changes in their environment. We are one such species. All we are killing is our species. The Earth will survive after, life will survive after, WE will not. We are not killing the planet – only ourselves.

Also, with countries like USA and China, you can forget about being able to meet the goal. Its a wonder that climate change denial is a thing in the USA, and that companies, politicians and lobbyists are able to brainwash people into thinking all of this is hocus-pocus liberal propaganda. I mean, it is a feat that they are able to politicize this issue. George Washington would be turning around in his grave for being right. It truly boggles the mind.

Runaway government is why there are so many people that don't even want to hear about this topic. A carbon tax could be good if levied against industry but vague wording and improper direction could see us paying to breathe with the type of people that keep making it to office. The rest of the suggestions made in the video seem right on but most of this can be best combatted by personal choices we each make every day.

Everyone should relax, humans will be fine. If you're concerned about the other species on this planet that's another discussion, but human beings will get along just fine. The human standard of living has increased exponentially across the globe in the last century and that advancement in the future will likely shield us from any negative effects of climate change. Droughts you say? I say technology will improve irrigation to the point it won't matter (or genetically engineered crops will be made drought resistant). Air pollution will kill us you say? I say improved home air filter technology will keep us safe. Increased bad weather will kill us you say? I'd say the last century saw the least deaths do to inclement weather in human history due to better building practices (and will continue to improve globally even in what we would consider to be empoverished countries). Technological advancement will make the next century better for humans than the current, regardless of what the climate is like.

The 2-4 degree higher temperatures during the Holocene maximum weren't catastrophic, most warm periods in the past 10,000 years have been 0.5C warmer and they were far from devastating. Actually, quit the opposite. The warming allowed for the simultaneous birth of agriculture world wide, the human population to double and even triple, empires to be born, and for humans to have a surplus of crops and livestock.

It is very tiresome to have these very extreme worst possible case "could" predictions from research papers being conveniently changed to "WOULD" ……… a glibly glossed over change that alters the whole scenario. There are only 3 options….Earth cools…..and we have a much better understanding of the adverse effects of cold weather, Earth stays virtually the same …..or Earth warms. If Earth warms, and this is warming may be beneficial (reportedly the Earth has "greened" by 15% this century), not change anything significantly or cause some problems…..and these problems may be easy to adapt to or require some effort to adapt to. The likelyhood that Humans can do anything about this remote chance it is a major problem is very unlikely…..as is the likelyhood it will be a major problem. Why the ridiculously alarmist and most extreme case view? And the blame being on CO2 is not shown by the obvious (BUT AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS) graph of CO2 on the X-axis and Temperature on the Y-axis for the 350 or so years since Thermometers were invented, Absolutely zero chance Temperature was MEASURED before then!!! Using NASA data directly from their website ( CO2 for each year and T for each year….delete the year and get CO2 and the matching T) I get a straight line graph close to zero gradient……..O.01 degrees C per ppm CO2…..ie need another 100ppm CO2 to increase T by 1 degree C……..and this rate is NOT accelerating…graph is a straight line!

(Statistical Rankings date back to 1880) By 2030 like said the video could be double of what it is now! I’m worried for my future and my kids too! Earth is in its warmest period in 3 million years and by 2050 could have a Climate not seen in over 50 million years where Greenland and Antarctica where green! And Alaska had a Climate similar to Florida, all of this might sound like a stretch but it’s very possible! If we don’t stop Global Warming earth’s climate by 2100 may look like something from a movie! And Earth’s itself maybe fine in the long term but it’s creatures including us humans will not be!

We are still at the end of a glacial period. Interglacial periods are usually marked by no ice at the poles. The most biologically productive eras in the history of the Earth have been warm with lots of CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 is a fertilizer for plants. Lots of warmth and CO2 will reverse deforestation. It will open up the Northwest Passage which will make trade easier. It will increase the growing season in large parts of the Earth that currently have too short a growing season. A warmer Earth will make many parts of the planet that are currently uninhabitable habitable such as the Antarctic. The reason that the Earth produced enough vegetation to support large herds of gigantic animals was because it was warm and had lots of CO2 in the air.

Reversing climate change and bringing us back into the glacial period that we are currently exiting would be disastrous and deadly. A cold Earth with little CO2 is an "ice age" with little forestation and a habitable zone essentially restricted to being between the two tropical latitudes.

Explain the ever fluctuating sea levels recorded at Fort Dorian that shows no significant change in sea levels throughout the last 100+ years

The fact that these so called studies only take into account a limited number of parameters such as duration, locations, and others along with the fact that there has only 1 proper systemic research mechanism, machine or software (russians) that has correctly simulated the change in climates over the last 50 years (if a system can recreate the past relatively accurately, it can possibly predict the most plausible future), these scientific data becomes null and void..

Therefore climate change is real.. but the notion that climate change is going to be catastrophic is the MYTH…
