Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Problems? What Samsung DIDN’T Tell You!

By Micah Moen 100 Comments August 25, 2019

– I’m Andru Edwards and
you’re watching Gear Live. (upbeat music) There’s a lot of excitement
surrounding the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy
Note 10 and Note 10+. Samsung filled us in on
all the important details at the UNPACKED Event
in Brooklyn last week, but there are a few things that
Samsung didn’t let us know. In this video, we take a look at 10 things that Samsung didn’t tell you
about the Galaxy Note 10. What’s going on TechSquad? Andru Edwards here,
editor-in-chief of GearLive.com and as I mentioned, last week was the big
Samsung UNPACKED Event in New York City taking
place at the Barclays Center where the Samsung Galaxy Note
10 and Note 10+ smartphones were revealed to the world. Samsung told us all about
their brand new smartphones but they did leave out a few details that I thought would be important
to communicate to you guys as you’re thinking about whether
or not you should upgrade to the new hotness. Now I mentioned there are 10 things that Samsung didn’t tell you. That doesn’t mean there’s
10 negative things that Samsung didn’t tell you. There’s also some pretty cool things that Samsung actually
didn’t have time to share on stage as well. I actually worked on this video with my friend, Kevin The Tech Ninja, so I’ll be going over the
first half with that list and then I’m going to
throw it over to Kevin in his channel for you to
pick up the second half. But without any further
delay, let’s get started, 10 things that Samsung didn’t tell you about the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. Let’s kick it off with
the first one on my list, wireless charging speeds. When the Galaxy Note9
was announced a year ago, the fast charging supported
up to 15-watt speeds when plugged into a wall and 7.-watt speeds when
using wireless charging. With the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+, we have some big charging improvements. The Note 10 charges at 25 watts when wired and 12 watts when wireless, so that’s 4-1/2 watts faster
than the Note9 from last year. And on the Note 10+ front. – The Note 10+ also supports
super fast wire charging up to 45 watts. (audience hollers)
(audience clapping) So, in just 30 minutes, if I forget to charge my phone overnight, no sweat whatsoever. In just 30 minutes, the time it takes me to get through my morning yoga routine, I have enough charge to
last me through the day. – That can actually charge at an insane 45 watts when wired. Now unfortunately, in the box, you’re still getting a 25-watt charger, but if you pick up a
faster charger on your own, you’ll be able to charge
the Galaxy Note 10+ at 45 watts, which is ridiculous. But what was more interesting to me was the wireless charging speeds. As I already mentioned,
last year’s Galaxy Note9 could wirelessly charge at 7.5 watts, and when plugged into a wall
could charge at 15 watts. Well this year, on the Note
10+, you’re actually getting wireless charging speeds of 15 watts. That means the wireless charging
speeds of the new Note 10+ are equal to the Note9’s
plugged-in wired charging speeds, which is just, that’s incredible. So we’re getting a longer lasting battery and it’s much faster for you
to charge that battery as well. Up next on my list, five
things Samsung did not tell you about the Galaxy Note 10, it does not work with the Gear
VR, Virtual Reality Headset. Last year, when the Note9 was released, Samsung also released a Type-C adapter for the Gear VR headset that allowed you to use it with the Note9. Sadly, this year, Samsung is
not giving that same treatment to the Galaxy Note 10. In fact, here’s a quote from
Samsung; I’ll read it to you. “The Gear VR is not compatible “with Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. “We remain committed to
innovating in VR and AR “to deliver incredible new
experiences to our consumers.” Which is a pretty vague statement. There was no mention of the Gear VR at all during the Galaxy UNPACKED Event, so Samsung support of
virtual reality headsets is kind of up in the air at this point. By the way, speaking of
virtual reality headsets, let me take a quick second to divert. If you haven’t seen it, I just did a video on the Oculus Quest, which is, in my opinion, the
true arrival of high-quality VR that you can take with you on the go. I will leave a card up here somewhere, as well as a link in the description if you haven’t seen it yet. That’s probably the direction I’d go if I wanted to use VR these days anyway, rather than a Gear VR headset, but the Gear VR does have a
much lower entry price point, so it’s a little disappointing to see. Next up, number three in my list, things Samsung didn’t tell you about the Note 10 and Note
10+, no headphone jack. Now I know they did tell you, actually, I don’t think,
they did not mention that. They didn’t mention that
there’s no headphone jack but we all already know, at this point, that the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ have removed the headphone jack after three years of
Samsung making fun of Apple, releasing commercials making fun of Apple for removing the headphone jack, they’ve gone and done the same thing. They’ve deleted all those
commercials off of YouTube and they’re even using the same reasoning that Apple use for removing
the headphone jack. Now, in the box, you are gonna find a pair of USB-C headphones with
your Galaxy Note 10 device, so you still will be
able to listen to music, just plugging into the USB-C port instead of the 3.5-millimeter
headphone jack. However, what Samsung is
not including in the box is the adapter, the USB-C
to 3.5-millimeter adapter that would allow you to plug in any wired headphones of your choosing. Samsung’s actually making
you buy the adapter if you need it. Compare that to Apple with the iPhone 7 when they removed the headphone jack, they actually included
Lightning headphones and the adapter free in the box. And then the next year with
the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X, again for that full year, Apple included the headphone jack adapter in the box as well. So for two phone generations, Apple included the headphone
adapter in the box, so it’s not that good of a look when Samsung deletes the headphone jack after making fun of Apple
for doing the same thing but does not include
the adapter in the box. Instead, they’re making
you spend extra money if you need it. All right, moving on to number four, the Galaxy Note 10 was announced as having a stainless steel frame but it turns out that
actually wasn’t true, and this is kind of a weird one. Samsung announced that the frame around the Galaxy Note
10 was stainless steel and when I went in for my hands-on, that did not seem to be the case, but sure enough, that bit of information was quietly removed from
the Galaxy Note 10 website. Rather than upgrading the
metal frame to stainless steel, it’s still using aluminum. No big deal in my opinion. Aluminum is totally fine, but when you say that
it’s stainless steel, then it turns out to be aluminum and someone had to call you out on it and then you remove it from the website, that just seems to be a little odd. So just know, if you’re
watching other YouTube videos that call out the stainless steel spec, just know that they’re going
off of old information. All right, let’s move on to number five, things Samsung did not tell
you about the Galaxy Note 10. Let’s talk about DeX for
PC and Link to Windows, and they did kind of talk about this, but again, that announcement kind of flew under the radar a little bit, so I figured I just go into
it a little more in depth. DeX on PC allows you to access
DeX features on the Note 10 right from your PC or even your Mac. Plug in your Note 10 with a USB-C to USB-C or USB-A cable and you’ll
get a dedicated DeX window that you can work in, accessing
all your data and files on your phone all kept
safe with Samsung Knox. So if you’re familiar with
previous years of DeX, you would take your Samsung smartphone and plug it into a dedicated monitor, so a monitor that wasn’t
plugged into anything else. Basically, your phone
acted as the computer. I’ve always thought that
was kind of inconvenient, so it’s cool to see that now
you can plug your Note 10 into a computer itself and have a DeX window
pop up on your computer. And again, very cool that it’s
both PC and Mac compatible, so you don’t need to have an
extra monitor lying around. You just need to have a PC, whether it’s a desktop or a laptop, and you can access those
DeX features on the go. Now, even cooler, separate feature, this is a separate feature, a lot of people thought
this was the same thing but it’s separate, is Link to Windows. What’s cool about this is there is no software install needed. Everything is built into Windows 10 and into the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. It allows you to sync content
from your phone to the PC. For example, messages, recent photos you’ve taken, notifications, and you can even do screen
mirroring from your phone. Now this is Samsung and Microsoft’s answer to what we see with
the iPhone and the Mac. iCloud powers all these different things. That’s why people love iMessage so much. You can get an iMessage on your phone that you can reply to it from your Mac. Everything syncs together, and we’ve never had that
same experience on Android. Now, to be clear, this is not an Android feature,
it’s a Samsung feature, but it’s still nice to be
able to receive text messages on your Samsung Galaxy Note
10 right on your Windows 10 PC and respond right there without having to pick up your phone. Same thing for notifications
and same thing for accessing and sending recent photos
you’ve taken as well. Now, this isn’t everything
that Apple customers get with iCloud, but it is a
step in the right direction by getting these two different ecosystems to at least talk to each other. Again, those are my five picks for what Samsung didn’t tell
you about the Galaxy Note 10. But as I said, we’ve got
five more on the list, but before I throw it
over to Kevin’s channel, link is in the description below and I will also leave a card right here for you to click over and get the rest of the
list in Kevin’s video. But before you do, be sure
to hit that Subscribe button in order to stay up to date on all the future Galaxy Note 10 videos that we’re gonna be putting out. And also smash that Like button if you happened to enjoy this video. Drop a comment down below if there’s anything I missed in this list, whether it’s positive or negative, I’ll meet you there
for further discussion. Now head on over to Kevin’s channel to see the rest of the list. Thank you so much for watching. As always guys, I appreciate your support. I’m Andru Edwards and I will
catch you in the next video. (lively music)

Samsung didn't mention a lot of details?

🤔

FYI first one from Andru is the same pretty much as the third from Kevin.

01. Wireless Charging Speeds

Note 10 25 watts (wired), 12 watts (wireless)

Note 10+ 45 watt (super fast charge sold separately), 15 watt (wirelessly)

15 watt (wired charging speed of note 9)

02. No Gear VR Support

So basically Samsung gave up on VR?

So I presume maybe we'll get an updated device later?

03. No headphone jack, no USB-C to 3.5mm included (sold separately)

04. stainless steel frame myth

actually aluminum

05. DEX on PC updated (don't need a separate monitor or software)

—— (from Kevin The Tech Ninja listed below) ——

01. Not all colors for all models.

Red = international buyers

Blue = Samsung online preorder only & some Best Buy stores

02. New Storage method

Now using UFS 3.0 storage.

Much faster access

03. can charge with 45 watt charger

25 watt charger included in the box (i.e. super fast charger sold separately for $50)

standard Note 10 is not compatible

04. Play Galaxy Link

can play PC games on the phone

05. Note 10 does not have expandable storage

Note 10+ (and Note 10+ 5G) has expandable storage

For the people that are interested in buying the smaller Note10, it’s because of the smaller form factor. The fact that you said it’s better to just buy the Note9 because it has a headphone jack, sd card and because it’ll be half the price makes no sense. If a person was ok with the BIG size of the Note9 they’d just buy the Note10 plus which does have all the bells and whistles.

Nice review. You comment about Apple including the adapter and you having to spend money, but for the pre-order you get $150 which allows you to buy Samsung Galaxy Buds and a headphone adapter, with a little left over. If you don't like the Samsung Galaxy Buds you can get the 45 watt charger or wireless charging pad. That's a better deal than Apple. Food for thought. . .

Just picked up my Note 10+ 5g. I came from a S10 5g and a A70 as my backup workphone. So far they haven't fixed the AOD glitch and it continues to flash randomly or turn off too fast when using touch to wake. Pocket touch is still broken. Since I didn't get the 45w charger yet, the 25w still randomly charges fast / slow charge when you have it in whatever setting. This is usually after you reset the device so if you use automatic reset feature this may annoy you if you prefer to save your battery and use slow charge.

Would have been great had the first thing stated on Note 10+ videos was "DO NOT TRY TO TAKE FILM OFF FRONT OF PHONE…" Luckily I stopped after a few attempts trying to get under the film because I saw how difficult it was to "peel it off" and realized the this may be the same type of covering the Samsung Flip users accidentally peeled off thinking it was just a "film cover…"

Even though I didn't manage to pull it off, I'm annoyed that the top left and right edges of my screen now looks "slightly frayed" because it wasn't mentioned to "NOT TRY TO PULL THE FILM OFF THE FRONT…"

Folks, DO NOT TRY TO PULL THE FILM OFF THE FRONT, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THERE… GROAN
