Dangers and Benefits of Erythritol

By Micah Moen 100 Comments March 19, 2020

let’s talk about the dangers and
benefits of erythritol now what is erythritol it’s a sugar alcohol it has
nothing to do with alcohol you’re not gonna get drunk by consuming erythritol basically it’s an alternative sweetener and it’s 60 to 70 percent as
sweet as sugar so it’s not exactly as sweet as sugar it’s a little less and it
does have a kind of a cooling effect when you consume it as far as the
calories go it has less than 25% of one calorie per gram like sugar has four
calories per gram protein has four calories per gram fat has nine calories
per gram erythritol has .24 calories
so it’s barely 1/4 of one calorie per gram very insignificant so in a
thumbnail sketch it’s 95 percent less calories than sugar it gets absorbed in
the small intestine okay it gets in the blood but it gets
excreted by the kidney unchanged so the microbes don’t like to eat it so you
really don’t have many negative effects with erythritol it has zero effect
on insulin it’s zero on the glycemic index it does not affect your blood
sugars so even though it’s made from sugar using a certain friendly yeast to
extract this sugar alcohol as long as it’s non-gmo I think it’s a really good
alternative sweetener what are the dangers at high doses greater than 50
grams which I don’t know anyone consuming that much in one sitting
you may get some gas bloating stomach noise and it may have a laxative effect
but other than that there’s actually virtually no additional dangerous side
effects alright thanks for watching and if you want more information about sugar
alcohols check out these videos on this screen

Off topic. I'm curious to know if anyone has seen Game Changer on Netflix. I would love to see the reactions to that documentary from the keto community.

I thought sugar is sugar even if alternative sweetener still sweet, so it will spikes insulin and break a fast.

Low carb/keto recipes and having fun Vernaz

I’m a low carb /keto recipe creator and I find a erythritol /stevia blend works best for baking and also for your coffee etc ….xylitol is terrible as it spikes your insulin levels and ofcourse it’s very dangerous for pets at home …monk fruit is great as a sweetener too …cheers

Dr. Berg, I really appreciate your content. I've read that erythritol, while not as researched as xylitol in this regard, potentially has an even more beneficial effect on teeth and gums than xylitol. German dentist, Dr Ulrich Bruhn experienced through years of use in his practice, that dissolving a 1/2 spoon of xylitol in the mouth and swishing w/the resultant mix of saliva and xylitol in the morning, after meals, and before bed can be a highly effective method of oral hygiene….imagine erythritol having an even greater benefit….wow…I would love to hear your thoughts on that. People using Xylitol used as Dr. Bruhn recommends, claim reversal of periodontal disease, cavities, etc. It stands to reason that if proper research was done, the findings could turn modern dentistry on its ear.

I have to laugh when I hear "non-GMO" being mentioned. Last I heard, there are only 2 or 3 manufacturers of Erythritol in the world and none of them is in the US. Trying to determine/verify whether those factories use non-GMO feedstocks is impossible. Period.

Hi, i have been doing keto and fasting for a couple years now, fine results, i recently had an ultrasound and whilst looking for one thing they found lesions in my liver, i am 60, had a ct scan scheduled for tomorrow to confirm liver cancer, i just received a phone call, the ct scan is cancelled due to covid-19, i will receive a doctor phone call in it's place, this means that if it is liver cancer, there wll be no operation or treatment and i will die, this is very frightening and i have to imagine that it is about to happen to lots of elderly patients to free up resources for the virus, the appointment was at the Royal London Hospital, England, UK, Any advice please ?

I don't believe it doesn't effect at all the microbiome; I am battling SIBO-C and I used (without knowing, as it was an ingredient in a Stevia sweetener) only a small quantity to sweeten my tea once a day; it did cause bloating in my small intestine, rumbling and even at that negligible dose it had a laxative effect; by the way, I did get SIBO again after replacing normal sugar with this type of sweeteners; I can't even use toothpaste or mouthwash that contains sorbitol anymore as it upsets my stomach and I get bloated. So I believe that all types of "alcohol" sugars are big NO!

I am going to disagree with you on this video. Every time I eat erythritol I have pain under my rib cage and my gallbladder hurts me for days and weeks after. I feel like all my gut bacteria are dead. It takes weeks of kombucha, sauerkraut, probiotics to feel good again. I will only use monk fruit!

I am allergic to erythritol-
I’ve gotten swollen tongue, swollen lips, swollen cheeks- very strange because I didn’t develop the allergy at first. It took about 6 months to become sensitized to it. Now I use Allulose which is very expensive, but a very good alternative and acts just like sugar in baking but no cooling effect.

Even in small quantities this stuff gives my father bad headaches that last for days; and it causes me to be lightheaded if I eat it regularly. I think you'd be better off saving your money and getting used to the taste of unsweetened foods and beverages.

Living One Day at a Time

I can not consume any sugars or artificial sweeteners. I tried an organic pure Stevia/Erythritol and had a bad reaction. I got a sugar flush, my gums and teeth ached like when consuming sugar. Got an unquenchable sugar craving, and it affected my liver. I find having a drop of raw honey or maple syrup to sweeten does not cause any of the reactions as in artificial sweeteners and sugar. Studies are coming out that all artificial sweeteners affect the liver, and it is stored in the body as fat.

Hey! So in your video "How to heal acne fast" you talked about taking vitamin A, vitamin b5 and zinc but you didnt mention any dosages. I saw a video of a mom clearing her sons acne only with megadosing vitamin b5 and I want to know what you would recommend. The only thing Im taking right now is 25mg of zinc. How much vit A and B5 should I take and should I up my zinc dosage? I heard about some hard side effects when taking too much but I want to hear your opinion

I did get a relapse in sugar intake. Went down bought a big cake, still feel guilty about that cake a week later, it wasn't small. Now I struggle with eating greens, I am rejecting greens more than ever. But when I have been in ketosis for some 3 weeks I usually start getting gravings for greens. But if I ingest sugar again, those vegies are almost unwelcome in my mouth. Strange science.

Can I add to that list chronic pain in muscles and weak bone feeling. If I don’t eat carbs I don’t have pain, it’s inflammation and feels like a migraine in my body, in severe cases of sugar overload ie even just a biscuit can even alter my brain chemistry making me extremely depressed and weepy. Sometimes sadly fillers in supplements can cause horrible side effects worse than a tsp of sugar. I can be up all night in pain and no pain killers even codeine won’t touch it. Do you Dr Berg or anyone else have any further insight?

I’ve tried erythritol several times I am one of the weird people they can’t tolerate it at all. When I tried to bake with it it had a good taste in the big guns but when I would eat a cookie or a piece of cake it always made me sick sick as a dog. So if there’s anybody out there that has had trouble like that with erythritol you’re not alone. I was also very disappointed that I am not able to use it.
