Beauty Hauls – What Not to Buy – Saving You Money & the Environment.

By Micah Moen 24 Comments October 7, 2019

Hi, Sharon Danley here with another
Two Minute Tip, or perhaps it’s more of an opinion piece this time. I’ve noticed
that a lot of the youtubers are doing what they call “hauls” that means products
that they’ve gone out and bought and then they review them and they let you
know about it. You know this is just another way of the fashion or cosmetics
industry getting people geared up to buy stuff. I’m gonna ask you a question. How many
shades of black do you really need? How many shades of bisque do you really
need? Personally as far as lipstick is concerned I think all that anybody needs
is about five to six shades. If you’ve got a dark medium and a light and say a
red a dark a medium a light in a pinkish tone and for those that can still wear
Browns which I’m beginning to find that I can too so so brownie tones or copper or
golden tones something that’s in the dark the medium and the light of those
that’s all you need. So what’s that three six nine. That’s nine – so I lied. That’s
all anybody needs. Any more than that is waste not only from your pocketbook but
the environment and everything that goes with it. You don’t need half the stuff that they say you need. Once you’ve got yourself set with the right makeup for you and the right brushes, and again you
only need a few, ……..and product that’s really all that you need and you don’t
need to buy buy buy buy buy. And this is personally what I have. See this bag not
big it’s got everything in it to take me from the boardroom to the ballroom to bed. Everything I could possibly want. And I’m
a professional artist and I could have all kinds of product given to me. Not interested. If there’s new stuff that’s great. I read all the reviews first and
make sure that most people think that it’s fabulous. Like BB Creams is an example or CC creams and now they have DD creams. Most of the professional artists that I know say that they don’t wear as well and I
tend to agree. Now for some people’s faces that’s great if you’ve got skin
like a 20 year old and and not many marks and all you want to select just
like a tinted moisturizer or the BB cream that’s terrific wonderful, but for those of us who have seen life and have the
scars to prove it, we need better coverage but not heavy coverage –
not like a trowel but done right. Anyway there’s lots of that information
available either on the e-book or if you want to join us it go and gray and
loving it on Facebook there’s lots of information there too. Remember don’t get sucked into these “hauls” and buying, buying, buying – its not necessary. OK back off the soapbox. See you next time.

Hi Sharon…I so agree with you.  I try to be so careful to be very honest with what I show but I always use a few basic products in my everyday life.  Occasionally I'll use something extra but I know I could survive very easily with just what you showed in your little bag !  patti  🙂

Ohhh…you are so right, Sharon.  I absolutely hate the waste I see on YT.  For instance, whole rooms dedicated to excess – horrendous – whether that is a walk-in closet OR make-up room.  A Professional, I can understand to some extend but I'm talking about the individual – from teens to seniors.  It seems to be almost a compulsion that is fed by YT.

I could have used your video earlier today when I went to Ulta and bought yet another lipstick!  For me, it's not that I need X number of shades of say, pink, rather it's the perfect, illusive formula I'm after.  Still, it feels excessive.  I could not agree more with all the "haul" videos I see online.  It seems obscene.  The ones that really get me are the ones that show off all their makeup/nail polish/clothes like it's something to aspire to.  Many of the high end cosmetic brands make eye shadow palettes and that's great.  Buy one.  But why o why o why are you buying five of them.  Good grief if I lived to me 100, I couldn't use up all of that eye shadow!

I am afraid I was that person. $31.00 mascara up to a few months ago, I am now a $10.00 mascara person. I got caught up in it all as age brought my appearance down. I had to throw out a couple of hundred dollars worth of products that went or were going bad.  That was the catalyst to the end of my addiction.  Thanks Sharon

Preach it sister. Sadly YT is not what it used to be since Google took over.  The impetus behind consumerism is the almighty dollar. If someone wants a ton of subscribers, to move up in the Google SEO, to get sponsors, make more $$$, then one really has to push product.  Anti aging anything is another big seller. I am 63 and not interested in most of it.  On a more positive note.  I just joined your group on FB!!  My hair has not seen color since Feb. and TBH driving me quite mad LOL  Really don't want to cut it so hoping for more great ideas on the FB page.  Greatly jealous of your gorgeous hair!!  <3 Jan

So true!!!  I am wondering if how weare with makeup in our life is how we are with the men in our life.   Some of us find one and stick with it…others no matter how old is always on the lookout for that elusive man and or lipstick/cosmetic…..then there is ME…just plain fickle.  I always think I am in love only to discover the man/makeup is just not quite right so ….  always on the hunt. .and I am way old enough to know better!!!!

You're right. I watch some of these videos. The best ones are instructional, the worst ones are "look at what I bought today." Years ago, when I joined a beauty board, I thought I was with a group of women who would share techniques, advice on picking and using products. There was that side of it but there was also the "haul" side of it. For some people, it may be a kind of competition or bragging and is definitely uncompensated advertising for the companies. For other people, it is social to talk about purchases. Still, just seeing what someone bought is not as useful as seeing a demo or getting an honest review. I still enjoy playing with my cosmetics, I am having to change what I use now that I am in my fifties. I also don' t feel the need to try out as many new items. In re to the BB, CC, DD creams, I have yet to hear a truly good review of any of them and I am wondering how many letters of the alphabet these cosmetic companies will run through before they stop. Perhaps they will go all the way to ZZ and then use a numbering system! Really, it is just another product to buy that is not really needed. 🙂

Sharon, I so agree with you. So much of YouTube beauty videos have become like infomercials with so much in the downbar of where you can buy the products they love…aka will make money on when you click thru their link. So glad I found your channel thru Patti at rxstrmom; I'm 49 and trying not to get sucked into buying all these products that promise youth in a bottle! I'm enjoying watching thru your playlists. I think aging is a beautiful thing, and my sweet mother just turned 92 on Oct 1, she is my inspiration. –Anne

Yes, girl! I like makeup as much as the next person, but I don't need ALL the things.  "Haul" videos are my least-favorite kind of videos to watch. ♥

So glad you piped up on this subject. I have watched several makeup gurus and their hauls and I think to my self, my gosh you only have one face, why do you need so ma y products? And they continue to buy more? Not $10.00 items, but Dior eye shadow for $60.00? And these gals are 30 years younger than I am? Where does this money come from? I refuse to purchase anymore after now viewing your video, not that I have a huge stash but really? It's gotten to be Hoarding! Thanks Sharon! AZ

Not into hauls or watching full rooms of make-up insanity.

At last, a voice of reason. I was watching a YouTube video the other night and the person (lovely, lovely person) has 50 (fifty!!) lipsticks. I'm not going to tell anyone how to spend his/her money but that is an insane number of lipsticks, especially considering that the other side of the 'haul' video, to which you refer, is the 'declutter' video where the YouTubers go through their hundreds of blushes, powders, bronzers etc one video at a time and toss out the things they either don't like anymore or which have gone past their Use By date. Madness.

Aloha! I realize this video was created in 2014, but I happened to view it today and found it so wonderfully refreshing. I've just come back from Hawaii after 16 years of abundant SUNSHINE, with the skin to prove it! Though I did take care of my skin to the best of my ability. After returning to the NW, I had to learn the art of skin care and makeup at a whole new level. I'm really grateful for the mature women of YouTube land who have created weekly tutorials, reviews, etc. I've learned lots. But I have to say that I have grown a bit weary of the Hauls and constant focus on physical beauty (though I appreciate it and strive to look my best) and addictive need to anti-age. It's challenging to stay out of the hype as we grow older and to fully embrace who we are as evolving Spiritual BEings. Thanks so much for bringing your perspective to the anti-aging industry. I will keep a few of my prized serums, lotions, and tools, but strive always to find balance and appreciate my "scars and wounds" from a well-lived life. :))).

So glad to hear a pro like you mention this. To each her own, but like you said we each only have one face. I've used the same eye pallet for ten years and only have that one. I keep my brushes clean and look forward to the day when I get to repurchase.

I just found you! Thank God I did! I'm 55 and am trying to figure it all out, never really knowing too much other than the basics but I need to do something! So I turned to YouTube for help. For the last 3+ years all I've done is accumulated stuff and I swear I look worse! You are such a great breath of FRESH AIR!!! I could just squeeze you! But I'm still trying to find the right foundation!

I never really did hauls, watched them, yes, but after I found you, I unsubbed from all but 2. They are our certain age. 🙂 Threw out or gave away all my BB creams, and that sort of thing. Only have powders now. 🙂 Thanks for saving me money!
