Welcome to Alaksen National Wildlife Area,
and George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Located just an hour south of Vancouver, British
Columbia, on Westham Island, within the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, these
protected areas are part of the Fraser River Delta, recognized as an internationally important
migration stopover and wintering area for nearly 1.4 million birds each year. Alaksen is known for the tens of thousands
of Snow Geese that arrive here, each fall, after their long migration route from the
Russian Arctic. They forage on agricultural fields specifically
managed to provide food for overwintering migratory birds. Alaksen is ideally situated in the transition
zones between river and marine environments, with marshlands, wetlands, forest, and farmland. And just next door is George C. Reifel Migratory
Bird Sanctuary. Together, these protected areas are also a
key refuge for migratory birds from Metro Vancouver, a natural oasis away from the busy
city. There are kilometres of nature trails, incredible
views, learning programs, and many places to enjoy. Come visit throughout the seasons, to learn,
to discover, to connect with nature.
